Two Chennai Students Spot Rare Plaintive Cuckoo at Odiyur Lake

Two Chennai school students, Amoggh Vijay Chatty and Aaditya S. Rajesh, have documented the sighting of a Plaintive cuckoo, a bird rarely seen in south India. The unique sighting took place on November 30, 2025, at the expansive Odiyur Lake near Paramankeni on East Coast Road.

The teenagers, both members of the Madras Naturalists’ Society, were on a weekend birding trip with their families when they spotted the vagrant cuckoo. Aaditya, a Grade 11 student of Maharishi Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, photographed the bird, confirming the rare presence of the species in the region. Amoggh, who studies in Grade 10 at PSBB Millennium School, was exploring the area with his parents, Sriram and Radhika Chatty.

Though the boys study in different schools, birding brings them together. Dressed in camouflage gear, they spend weekends tracking birds across Chennai and its outskirts. On this trip, they travelled in separate cars with their families, but their shared passion helped them record one of the most unexpected sightings of the season.

The Plaintive cuckoo, usually not found in southern India, is considered a vagrant in this region. Its documentation adds value to ongoing ecological studies and contributes to the local birding records.
