A Well-Earned Spot in the Candidates for Praggnanandhaa

    R. Praggnanandhaa has secured his place in the 2026 Candidates Tournament, despite a disappointing early exit at the recent Chess World Cup in Goa. The Indian Grandmaster, who was the third seed, was eliminated in the fourth round by Russia’s Daniil Dubov — a setback that also ended his chances of qualifying through the FIDE Circuit.

Praggnanandhaa had reached the World Cup final in the previous edition and was close to sealing his spot for the Candidates through multiple qualification routes. A top-three finish in Goa would have confirmed his berth, making his early elimination a significant blow. However, based on his overall performances in the season, he has now secured the coveted spot.

The 2026 Candidates Tournament will be held in Cyprus between March and April next year. If Praggnanandhaa wins the event, he will challenge reigning World Champion D. Gukesh — setting up the possibility of an all-Indian clash for the world title.

The qualification adds another chapter to India’s rapid rise in international chess, with both Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh now standing at the forefront of the global elite.
