Air India Flight Hit by Severe Turbulence, 17 Injured as Mid-Air Chaos Leaves Passengers Shaken

A routine international flight turned into a terrifying experience after an Air India aircraft travelling from Phuket, Thailand, to New Delhi encountered severe turbulence, leaving at least 17 people injured, including four cabin crew members. The violent mid-air disturbance caused panic inside the aircraft as passengers were thrown from their seats, overhead luggage compartments burst open, and baggage fell into the cabin.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Tuesday when the aircraft flew through an area of intense atmospheric instability. Although pilots managed to maintain control of the aircraft and complete the journey safely, passengers described the experience as one of the most frightening moments of their lives.

The turbulence caused extensive damage inside the cabin, with broken overhead storage panels, scattered luggage and visible signs of impact throughout the aircraft. Several passengers sustained injuries after being struck by falling baggage or being jolted against seats and cabin fixtures during the violent shaking.

    Mid-Air Turbulence Triggers Panic

Passengers onboard recalled moments of complete chaos as the aircraft suddenly encountered powerful turbulence without much warning. Many said the aircraft dropped abruptly several times, creating panic throughout the cabin.

Those who had not fastened their seatbelts were reportedly thrown upward as the aircraft shook violently. Personal belongings, cabin baggage and loose objects were tossed around, while luggage compartments unexpectedly opened, allowing bags to crash into the aisle and passenger seating areas.

Several travellers described hearing loud noises as overhead locker panels became damaged during the incident. Broken compartment doors and hanging luggage remained visible inside the aircraft until it landed safely in Delhi.

Passengers who witnessed the incident said many people screamed while others tried to protect family members from falling baggage.

Cabin Crew Worked to Maintain Calm

Despite suffering injuries themselves, Air India’s cabin crew continued assisting passengers throughout the emergency.

According to eyewitness accounts, one flight attendant repeatedly instructed passengers through the public announcement system to fasten their seatbelts immediately, while another crew member could reportedly be heard shouting instructions as the turbulence intensified.

Passengers praised the professionalism of the crew, noting that despite the frightening conditions and visible concern, they continued moving through the cabin whenever it was safe to assist injured travellers and reassure those in distress.

Several crew members themselves were among those injured after being thrown during the unexpected turbulence while carrying out onboard duties.

    Seventeen People Injured

Reports indicated that a total of 17 individuals sustained injuries during the incident, including four members of the cabin crew.

The injuries ranged from minor bruises and cuts to more serious impacts caused by falling baggage and sudden movement inside the aircraft. Medical assistance was arranged after the aircraft landed safely in New Delhi, where injured passengers and crew members were examined and provided necessary treatment.

Authorities have not indicated that any of the injuries were life-threatening, but several passengers described the incident as traumatic and emotionally distressing.

    Interior of Aircraft Suffers Damage

Images and videos recorded after the turbulence showed the extent of damage inside the aircraft cabin.

Several overhead storage compartments appeared broken, with locker panels hanging loose. Bags and personal belongings were scattered across the aisle, while some luggage remained partially suspended from damaged compartments.

The condition of the cabin reflected the intensity of the turbulence, highlighting the force with which the aircraft had been shaken.

Aviation experts note that severe turbulence can generate powerful vertical forces capable of lifting passengers and heavy luggage if seatbelts are not secured properly.

    Passengers Recall Frightening Moments

Many passengers later shared their experiences, describing the flight as a near-death experience.

Some said they believed the aircraft might not recover from the sudden drops, while others recalled praying throughout the incident. Parents reportedly struggled to comfort frightened children as the cabin shook violently.

Several passengers credited the pilots and cabin crew for handling the emergency professionally and ensuring the aircraft landed safely despite the difficult conditions.

Travellers also highlighted how important the seatbelt instructions proved to be, with many acknowledging that those wearing seatbelts appeared to avoid more serious injuries.

    Importance of Seatbelt Safety

The incident has once again drawn attention to aviation safety practices, particularly the importance of keeping seatbelts fastened whenever passengers are seated.

Airlines worldwide routinely advise travellers to keep their seatbelts securely fastened throughout the flight, even when the seatbelt sign is switched off, as clear-air turbulence and sudden weather-related disturbances can occur unexpectedly.

Aviation safety specialists explain that turbulence itself rarely threatens the structural integrity of modern aircraft. However, passengers who are not restrained remain vulnerable to injuries caused by sudden vertical movement.

The latest incident serves as another reminder that following crew instructions can significantly reduce the risk of injury during unexpected weather events.

Weather Conditions Remain a Challenge for Aviation

Meteorological experts have noted that changing weather patterns, seasonal storms and atmospheric instability can increase the likelihood of turbulence on several international flight routes.

Pilots receive continuous weather updates and routinely adjust flight paths whenever possible to avoid severe turbulence. However, some atmospheric disturbances develop rapidly or cannot be completely avoided, making passenger preparedness essential.

Commercial aircraft are specifically designed to withstand turbulence, and flight crews undergo extensive training to manage such situations while prioritising passenger safety.

Airline and Authorities Expected to Review Incident

Following the incident, aviation authorities and the airline are expected to examine operational data, weather information and flight records to understand the circumstances surrounding the severe turbulence.

Such reviews generally focus on weather conditions, aircraft performance and emergency response procedures to determine whether additional safety measures or operational recommendations are necessary.

The findings may also contribute to improving future turbulence forecasting and flight planning.

Safe Landing Prevented a Larger Tragedy

Although the incident caused injuries and considerable panic among passengers, aviation experts emphasise that the safe landing of the aircraft demonstrates the effectiveness of modern aviation safety systems and crew training.

Passengers expressed relief after reaching New Delhi safely, with many thanking the pilots and cabin crew for their calm handling of an extremely challenging situation.

The incident serves as a powerful reminder that while severe turbulence remains one of the most unsettling experiences during air travel, adherence to safety procedures, professional crew response and modern aircraft design continue to play a critical role in protecting passengers during unexpected emergencies.
