Heavy Monsoon Batters Delhi and Several States, Triggers Flooding, Traffic Chaos and Rescue Operations

India's monsoon continued to unleash widespread disruption on Thursday, with relentless rainfall affecting several parts of the country, particularly Delhi-NCR, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Odisha and Haryana. The heavy showers resulted in severe waterlogging, traffic congestion, flooding, rising river levels, road closures and multiple casualties, prompting weather agencies and local administrations to issue alerts and intensify emergency response efforts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) placed several regions under orange and red alerts as intense rainfall persisted throughout the day. Authorities across multiple states urged residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel and strictly follow official advisories while disaster management teams continued rescue and relief operations in vulnerable areas.

Delhi-NCR Faces Another Day of Monsoon Chaos

Delhi and the National Capital Region witnessed one of the most disruptive spells of rainfall this monsoon season. Heavy showers that began during the early morning hours inundated roads across several parts of the city, causing severe traffic congestion and making daily commuting extremely difficult.

The IMD initially issued a red alert for several districts of Delhi, warning residents of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. As weather conditions evolved later in the day, the warning was revised to an orange alert, although authorities continued monitoring the situation closely.

Major roads across central, south and east Delhi experienced waterlogging, slowing vehicular movement for several hours. Traffic bottlenecks were reported from multiple important corridors, including Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Mathura Road, Lodhi Road, ITO, Rohtak Road, Delhi-Jaipur Highway and several sections of the Outer Ring Road.

The rainfall added to the existing traffic burden created by Kanwar Yatra movement and ongoing infrastructure projects, including expansion work near the Modi Mill Flyover and Savitri Flyover. Together, these factors resulted in long traffic delays across the capital.

Although the rainfall brought temporary relief from humid weather conditions, it also exposed the city's recurring drainage and urban infrastructure challenges, with commuters spending hours navigating flooded roads.

Gurugram Advises Work From Home

Neighbouring Gurugram also experienced significant disruption as continuous overnight rainfall submerged roads and residential areas.

In an unusual move aimed at reducing congestion and assisting emergency services, Gurugram Police issued an advisory requesting corporate offices and private establishments to allow employees to work from home wherever possible.

Officials said limiting the movement of non-essential vehicles would help emergency teams respond more effectively while easing traffic congestion caused by waterlogged roads.

Several parts of Gurugram witnessed flooding after heavy rain continued from the early hours of Thursday. Key roads, including stretches of the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway, experienced slow-moving traffic due to accumulated rainwater.

Residents in some areas continued to report civic challenges, including earlier power outages and disruptions to water supply that had affected daily life over the previous two days.

Kerala Continues to Battle Flood Emergency

Kerala remained among the worst-affected states as continuous heavy rainfall sustained flood conditions across multiple districts.

According to state authorities, at least 26 people have lost their lives due to rain-related incidents, while over 27,000 residents have been shifted to hundreds of relief camps established across the state.

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. Orange alerts remained in place for several other districts, including Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kannur and Kasaragod.

Floodwaters continued affecting large parts of the Kuttanad region, where roads, residential areas and agricultural land remained submerged. Although officials reported that water levels had started receding in certain locations, many villages remained isolated and transportation continued to be severely affected.

Authorities have deployed rescue teams while government agencies continue monitoring reservoirs, rivers and vulnerable regions to minimise further risks.

Uttar Pradesh Reports Multiple Rain-Related Deaths

Heavy rainfall also claimed lives in Uttar Pradesh, where at least nine people reportedly died in separate rain-related incidents.

The most tragic incident occurred in Pratapgarh district, where a nearly century-old house collapsed during heavy rain, killing six members of a family, including two infants.

Additional fatalities were reported from Barabanki and Saharanpur following separate incidents involving collapsing walls and damaged houses.

Local authorities have begun relief measures while advising residents living in structurally weak buildings to remain cautious during continuing rainfall.

Uttarakhand Rivers Rise as Landslides Disrupt Highways

Continuous rainfall across Uttarakhand's mountainous regions led to rising water levels in major rivers and fresh concerns about landslides.

The Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers recorded increased flow levels in Rudraprayag district, prompting disaster management authorities to issue warnings asking people to stay away from riverbanks.

Officials confirmed that while river levels remained below the danger mark in certain areas, they continue to be monitored around the clock due to the possibility of further rainfall in upper Himalayan regions.

The Ganga River also crossed the warning level near Rishikesh's Triveni Ghat, leading authorities to intensify evacuation preparedness and public awareness campaigns.

Meanwhile, landslides blocked portions of both the Gangotri and Yamunotri National Highways in Uttarkashi district. Continuous rockfall and debris accumulation disrupted traffic movement, affecting pilgrims and local commuters.

Disaster response teams remained stationed across vulnerable stretches to restore connectivity as weather conditions permit.

Odisha Experiences Urban Flooding

Heavy overnight rainfall also affected Odisha's capital, Bhubaneswar, where nearly 100 millimetres of rain was recorded.

Several low-lying neighbourhoods witnessed water entering homes, while roads in residential colonies remained flooded for several hours.

Areas including Saheed Nagar, Laxmisagar and GGP Colony were among the locations that experienced significant waterlogging.

The IMD issued an orange warning for Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts, forecasting additional heavy rainfall and advising residents to remain prepared for further weather-related disruptions.

Andhra Pradesh Forecast to Receive More Rain

The India Meteorological Department also forecast thunderstorms, lightning and isolated heavy rainfall across several parts of Andhra Pradesh over the coming days.

Strong surface winds accompanying rainfall are expected in coastal districts as weather systems remain active over the Bay of Bengal.

Authorities have advised fishermen, farmers and residents in vulnerable locations to remain updated with official weather bulletins.

Disaster Response Teams Remain on Alert

State governments across India have activated disaster management authorities to respond quickly to emergencies arising from flooding, landslides and severe weather conditions.

Rescue personnel, police forces and local administration teams continue monitoring rivers, reservoirs and flood-prone areas while relief camps remain operational in affected states.
