Congress, CPI(M) MLAs Walk Out of Assam Assembly After Speaker Blocks Tezpur University Discussion

    Guwahati | November 29, 2025 — Yugcharan News

Members of the Congress and CPI(M) staged a walkout from the Assam Assembly on Saturday after Speaker Biswajit Daimary refused to allow a discussion on the situation at Tezpur University.

Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia had sought clarity from the Speaker on whether his party’s Zero Hour notice regarding the matter had been accepted. Saikia said that academic activities at the central university had remained disrupted in recent weeks and pointed to rising concerns among students following developments on the campus since mid-September.

He also alleged that the vice-chancellor had been unavailable to the university community during the ongoing tensions.

Speaker Daimary, however, maintained that the Assembly could not deliberate on issues related to a central university. He added that such concerns could be raised later during discussions on Education Department bills scheduled for the day.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the decision, MLAs from the Congress and CPI(M) left the House in protest.
