H-1B Visa Interviews Cancelled as U.S. Begins Social Media Vetting from Dec 15

The U.S. State Department’s new social media vetting policy has led to widespread cancellations of H-1B visa appointments across India. Interviews scheduled on or after December 15 are being called off, with applicants asked to reschedule, causing major disruption during the holiday travel season.

Under the new rule, consular officers will review applicants’ public social media profiles, requiring all H-1B and H-4 applicants to make their accounts accessible and disclose usernames used in the last five years. Visa experts say this additional scrutiny has reduced appointment availability and added new uncertainty to the already complex visa process.

Immigration attorneys have criticised the timing of the rollout, calling it poorly planned. The State Department defended the move, stating that every visa adjudication is a national security decision. Meanwhile, separate changes announced by the Trump administration will also cut EAD validity from five years to 18 months for several categories starting December 5.
