Kerala Actor Maniyanpillai Raju Named in Road Accident Case in Thiruvananthapuram; Two Youths Injured

A road accident involving well-known Malayalam film actor and producer Maniyanpillai Raju has come under police investigation in Kerala’s capital city after two young men were injured when their motorcycle was hit by a car late on Thursday night.

According to police officials, the incident took place around 10 p.m. near the Trivandrum Club area at Vazhuthacaud, a busy stretch in Thiruvananthapuram. The motorcycle, carrying two local youths, was reportedly struck by a car allegedly driven by the actor. Both riders sustained serious injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The injured have been identified as Nivedith Krishna and Suraj, residents of Thiruvananthapuram. Medical sources said they suffered significant injuries to their legs and spine and remain under observation.

Based on a preliminary inquiry, the Museum police registered a case against the actor on charges related to rash driving and failure to follow post-accident legal responsibilities. Officers stated that the vehicle involved did not stop immediately after the collision to check on the condition of the injured or arrange medical help.

Police sources indicated that the accident occurred shortly after the car exited the Trivandrum Club premises. During an attempt to take a sudden U-turn towards the Kowdiar side, the vehicle allegedly came into contact with the motorcycle that was travelling in the same direction. The impact threw the two riders onto the road.

Investigators recovered damaged parts of the car, including a detached number plate and pieces of the front bumper, from the accident site. Subsequent verification showed that the vehicle is registered in the name of Sudheer Kumar Raju, which police confirmed is the actor’s official name.

The car itself was later found to have visible damage consistent with the collision, police added.

As part of the ongoing investigation, Maniyanpillai Raju was asked to appear before the Museum police station on Friday along with the vehicle involved. He complied with the directive and reached the station, where formal procedures related to the case were initiated.

The police have booked the case under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to negligent driving and endangering public safety. Sections of the Motor Vehicles Act dealing with failure to provide immediate medical assistance to accident victims and failure to report an accident to the nearest police station have also been invoked.

A senior police officer said that the registration of the case does not imply guilt and that all aspects, including statements from witnesses, medical reports, and technical evidence such as CCTV footage, will be examined thoroughly.

“The investigation is at an early stage. We are collecting statements from the injured, eyewitnesses, and other relevant persons. The sequence of events will be established based on evidence,” the officer said.

The incident has drawn public attention due to the actor’s long-standing presence in Malayalam cinema. Maniyanpillai Raju is known for his work as a character actor and producer, with a career spanning several decades. News of his involvement in the accident spread quickly across the city and on social media, prompting discussions on road safety and accountability.

Legal experts noted that road accident cases are treated strictly under current laws, irrespective of the individual’s public profile. “The law applies uniformly. What matters is whether due care was exercised and whether statutory duties after an accident were fulfilled,” a senior advocate said.

Meanwhile, the families of the injured youths have appealed for a fair and transparent investigation. Local residents in the Vazhuthacaud area also raised concerns about frequent traffic congestion and risky manoeuvres near the club zone, calling for better traffic regulation during late evening hours.

Police officials said traffic patterns in the area would be reviewed and assured that appropriate preventive steps would be taken if required.

As the probe continues, authorities have reiterated that further action will be based on the findings of the investigation and medical reports. The condition of the injured youths remains stable, according to hospital sources, and they are expected to require extended medical care.

The case is likely to proceed in accordance with standard legal procedures in the coming days.
