Mamata Banerjee Reiterates Opposition to NRC, Criticises BJP at Murshidabad Rally

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday strongly criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during an anti-SIR rally in Murshidabad, reaffirming that her government would not implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the State.

Addressing attendees, Ms. Banerjee said that Bengal has a long history of social harmony and added that the people of the region do not support divisive politics. She emphasised that her administration would continue to oppose any proposal for detention centres or measures linked to NRC.

The Chief Minister alleged that political debates around the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) were being influenced by religious narratives. She also stated that several incidents linked to the process in the past had affected individuals from different communities.

Ms. Banerjee urged citizens to remain united and assured them that her government would safeguard their rights. She reiterated that West Bengal would not adopt the NRC framework under any circumstances.
