Mumbai Police Arrest Father After DNA Confirms Sexual Abuse of Hearing-Impaired Woman

Mumbai Police have arrested a man after DNA analysis confirmed that he sexually abused his 20-year-old daughter, a woman with hearing and speech disabilities, resulting in her pregnancy. The case, which surfaced last year in south Mumbai’s Cuffe Parade area, has raised serious concerns about abuse within vulnerable households and the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in accessing justice.

According to investigators, the crime came to light in September 2025 when the young woman complained of persistent physical discomfort to her grandmother using hand gestures. Family members initially believed it to be a medical issue and admitted her to Cama and Albless Hospital for examination. Doctors discovered that she was nearly five months pregnant and immediately informed the police, following mandatory reporting norms.

    Communication Barriers Delayed Disclosure

Police officials said the investigation initially faced difficulties due to communication barriers, as the survivor is unable to hear or speak. Officers arranged counselling and support services to help her communicate her experience. During the early stages, the woman was reluctant to formally record a complaint.

When questioned, her father reportedly failed to provide any explanation for the pregnancy and denied any wrongdoing. He also declined to file a complaint or assist police in clarifying the circumstances, which raised further suspicion among investigators.

After sustained counselling and assurance of support, the woman agreed to lodge a formal complaint. Based on her statement, police widened the investigation and identified multiple suspects who had access to the survivor during the period in question.

    Multiple Detentions, DNA Testing Ordered

During the course of the probe, police arrested one adult man and detained a 17-year-old boy, both of whom were identified by the survivor as having sexually assaulted her. To establish responsibility conclusively, investigators collected blood and DNA samples from 17 individuals, including family members and other suspects.

The samples were sent for forensic examination and compared with genetic material from the foetus. On January 27, the forensic report revealed a single positive match — the woman’s father.

Following the confirmation, police arrested him on charges related to sexual assault and abuse. Officials said the offences allegedly took place over several months, between March and September 2025. A formal case had been registered on September 22, soon after the pregnancy was medically confirmed.

    Ongoing Investigation Into Wider Abuse

Senior police officers said the investigation is continuing to determine the exact roles of other suspects and whether additional offences were committed. The previously arrested man and the juvenile remain under judicial process, and authorities are examining whether the survivor was subjected to repeated abuse over an extended period.

“The case is being investigated with sensitivity, given the survivor’s condition and the serious nature of the allegations,” a police official said. “We are ensuring that all legal procedures are followed and that the survivor receives medical, psychological, and legal assistance.”

    Focus on Survivor Support

Officials said that child protection services, disability support professionals, and counsellors have been involved to ensure the woman’s well-being. Given her vulnerability, special care is being taken during questioning and court proceedings, including the use of interpreters and trained professionals.

Legal experts note that cases involving survivors with disabilities often face delays due to communication challenges, social stigma, and dependence on caregivers, who may themselves be involved in the abuse. They stress the importance of accessible reporting mechanisms and regular monitoring by social welfare agencies.

A Stark Reminder of Hidden Abuse

The case has drawn attention to the issue of abuse within families, particularly involving individuals who are unable to easily communicate or seek help. Rights groups have called for stronger safeguards for persons with disabilities, including routine health check-ups, community awareness, and mandatory reporting by caregivers and institutions.

Mumbai Police have urged citizens to report suspected abuse promptly and assured that specialised units are available to handle such cases with confidentiality and care.

As the investigation progresses, authorities say their priority remains ensuring justice for the survivor while preventing further harm. The case is expected to proceed to trial once the remaining aspects of the probe are completed.
