New Zealand, India Conclude Free Trade Agreement

New Zealand and India have concluded a long-awaited free trade agreement, aiming to significantly boost bilateral trade and economic ties. The pact will eliminate or reduce tariffs on about 95% of New Zealand’s exports to India, with over half becoming duty-free immediately, improving access to India’s fast-growing consumer market.

Under the agreement, New Zealand will also offer 1,667 temporary work visas annually for skilled Indian professionals in sectors such as healthcare, education, engineering and technology, along with 1,000 working-holiday visas each year. The deal is expected to be formally signed in the first half of 2026.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called the agreement wide-ranging and economically significant, highlighting India’s rapid growth and global importance. While the Indian government confirmed the pact, detailed comments are awaited.

However, the deal may face political hurdles in New Zealand, with coalition partner New Zealand First opposing it over concerns related to immigration and dairy sector access. In 2024, two-way trade between the countries stood at NZ$3.14 billion, led by Indian pharmaceutical exports and New Zealand’s agricultural and forestry products.
