PM Modi Calls for Deeper India–Malaysia Strategic Partnership, Emphasises Firm Stand Against Terrorism

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday underscored India’s commitment to building a stronger and more comprehensive partnership with Malaysia, describing the bilateral relationship as strategically important amid shifting regional and global dynamics. Addressing a joint press interaction with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur, Mr. Modi asserted that cooperation between the two countries would expand across key sectors while maintaining a clear and uncompromising position against terrorism.

The high-level talks culminated in the signing of 11 agreements and understandings spanning defence cooperation, semiconductors, trade facilitation, advanced manufacturing, energy, and digital technologies. Both leaders projected the visit as a turning point aimed at elevating India–Malaysia relations to meet emerging economic and security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

Focus on Trade, Investment and Technology

During the discussions, the two Prime Ministers placed strong emphasis on boosting bilateral trade and investment. India and Malaysia agreed to work closely in areas such as advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, critical minerals, and semiconductor supply chains, reflecting shared concerns about resilience and diversification in global production networks.

A key outcome of the talks was a framework agreement to deepen cooperation in the semiconductor sector. Both leaders agreed on the importance of completing the review of the ASEAN–India Trade in Goods Agreement at an early date. According to officials, updating the agreement is seen as essential to address market access issues, modernise trade rules, and unlock the full potential of economic ties between India and Southeast Asia.

Malaysia reaffirmed its support for India’s deeper engagement with ASEAN, while India acknowledged Malaysia’s role as a key partner in the region.

Multilateral Cooperation and Global Reforms

On global issues, the two Prime Ministers exchanged views on the need to reform international institutions to reflect contemporary realities. Malaysia reiterated its support for India’s permanent membership in a reformed United Nations Security Council, a position New Delhi has consistently sought backing for from partners across regions.
