Senior BJP leader Prem Kumar was unanimously elected Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, marking another milestone in his long political career. Pro-tem Speaker Narendra Narayan Yadav informed the House that Prem Kumar was the only nominee for the post, leading to his election through a voice vote.

Prem Kumar, who recently secured the Gaya Town seat for a record eighth consecutive term, was formally escorted to the Speaker’s Chair by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav, following legislative tradition.

The election took place on the second day of the 18th Bihar Assembly, which commenced with the swearing-in of newly elected MLAs. Members across party lines greeted the new Speaker, reflecting rare unanimity in the House.

Prem Kumar has been one of the longest-serving legislators in Bihar and has held key portfolios in previous governments. His elevation to the Speaker’s post is seen as a recognition of his experience and seniority.
