    Repeated Wildlife Sightings Near Marayeepalayam Hillock Cause Concern Among Local Residents

    Frequent sightings of a large wild animal in the Marayeepalayam hillock area near Punjai Puliyampatti in Tamil Nadu’s Sathyamangalam taluk have led to growing concern among residents, prompting renewed appeals to the Forest Department for effective intervention and reassurance of public safety.

    The hillock, spread across nearly 144 hectares and marked by rocky terrain and scattered vegetation, has been under observation since early December 2025 after the first reported sighting. Over the following weeks, additional sightings were reported, heightening anxiety among people living in nearby habitations, particularly those whose daily routines involve movement near the foothills.

    Initial Sightings and Forest Department Response

    According to local accounts, the first sighting occurred during the first week of December, when residents noticed movement of a wild animal on the hillock. About a week later, more than one animal was reportedly seen in the same area, leading to increased apprehension, especially during early morning and evening hours.

    In response, officials from the Vilamundi Forest Range Office, functioning under the Sathyamangalam Division of the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR), initiated a series of monitoring and precautionary measures. These included placing multiple cages in strategic locations, installing camera traps to track movement patterns, and deploying drones to survey the rocky landscape from above.

    Forest personnel also conducted ground-level inspection and combing exercises across the hillock, which is known for its numerous boulders and natural crevices. Despite these sustained efforts, officials said they were unable to locate or safely guide the animal away from the area.

    Continued Sightings Add to Unease

    Even after the initial measures, reports of sightings continued to surface. On January 20, 2026, residents reported seeing the animal moving down from a large rock formation, an incident that further unsettled the local community. Many residents expressed concern over safety, particularly for children, elderly people, and those involved in agricultural and daily wage activities near the hillock.

    A Forest Department official familiar with the situation explained that the rocky formations provide natural shelter, making tracking difficult. The area also supports a sizeable population of wild prey animals, which could be contributing to the continued presence of the wildlife in the region. Officials added that the bait placed in the cages had not been disturbed, indicating that conventional methods may not be yielding immediate results.

    Community Concerns and Daily Life Impact

    Residents of Marayeepalayam and surrounding villages said the repeated sightings have disrupted daily routines. Many people have begun avoiding travel during low-light hours, while farmers and cattle rearers have become more cautious when working near the hillock.

    Local representatives said villagers are not opposed to wildlife conservation but want clear and timely action to prevent potential human-animal encounters. They have urged the Forest Department to strengthen monitoring, deploy additional experts if necessary, and keep the public informed through regular updates.

    “There is fear mainly because of uncertainty,” said a resident. “People want assurance that the situation is being managed and that safety measures are in place.”

    Official Assurance and Ongoing Monitoring

    Forest officials have reiterated that the situation is under continuous watch and that there is no immediate cause for panic. They said patrolling in and around the hillock has been intensified and that surveillance equipment remains active. Awareness messages have also been conveyed to residents, advising them to avoid isolated paths and to report any sightings promptly to authorities.

    Officials stressed that the department’s approach balances public safety with wildlife protection norms. Any further steps, they said, would be taken based on expert assessment and prevailing conditions on the ground.

    Call for Calm and Cooperation

    Authorities have appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with field staff. They have also cautioned against spreading unverified information, which could lead to unnecessary fear. Residents have been encouraged to follow official advisories and to use designated helplines to share information.

    As monitoring continues, both officials and locals hope that the situation will stabilise soon, allowing daily life to return to normal while ensuring the well-being of both people and wildlife in the region.
