Russia Reaffirms Greenland as Danish Territory, Criticises Western Narrative on Security Concerns

Russia has stated that Greenland remains an integral territory of Denmark and has criticised what it described as “double standards” adopted by Western nations regarding security concerns linked to the Arctic region. The remarks come amid growing global attention on Greenland’s strategic importance and renewed political debate surrounding its future.

Speaking on Friday, Kremlin officials said that from the perspective of international law, Greenland’s status as an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty is clear. Moscow further added that the current security environment around the Arctic island is becoming increasingly complex and requires responsible dialogue rather than political speculation.

Russia Rejects Claims of Threats to Greenland

Russian authorities expressed strong objections to repeated claims from Western governments suggesting that Russia or China pose a threat to Greenland. According to the Kremlin, such allegations are unfounded and contribute to unnecessary tension in an already sensitive geopolitical region.

Officials stated that portraying Greenland as being under threat reflects selective interpretation of global security norms. Moscow argued that while Western powers often position themselves as defenders of international law, their actions and statements in the Arctic region suggest inconsistencies in that approach.

“The situation around Greenland demonstrates how certain countries apply international principles differently depending on their strategic interests,” a Kremlin spokesperson noted while addressing media in Moscow.

Context of U.S. Interest in Greenland

Russia’s statement comes against the backdrop of renewed interest from the United States in Greenland. U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his view that Greenland holds significant strategic value for American national security, citing its geographic position and Arctic access.

Greenland, though largely self-governing, remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark, which is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Denmark has consistently maintained that Greenland is not for sale and that any future decisions regarding its status rest with the people of Greenland.

Russia refrained from commenting directly on U.S. domestic discussions but stressed that any debate over Greenland should respect existing international agreements and sovereign frameworks.

    Arctic Security and International Law

The Arctic region has gained increased attention in recent years due to climate change, emerging shipping routes, and access to natural resources. As ice coverage reduces, the strategic and economic value of Arctic territories has grown, prompting interest from multiple global powers.

Moscow emphasised that Arctic security should be addressed through established international mechanisms and cooperation rather than unilateral statements. Russian officials warned that politicising Arctic territories could undermine long-standing regional stability.

Experts note that Russia has historically advocated for Arctic governance through multilateral dialogue, including forums that involve Arctic nations and indigenous communities.

    Developments on Ukraine Peace Dialogue

In a related briefing, the Kremlin also addressed developments surrounding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Russian officials welcomed recent statements from Italy, France, and Germany expressing willingness to resume dialogue with Moscow on pathways toward peace.

According to the Kremlin, this shift aligns with Russia’s long-standing position that diplomatic engagement remains essential for resolving the conflict. However, officials clarified that while Russia maintains ongoing communication with the United States on peace-related efforts, similar structured dialogue has not yet been established with European governments.

“This difference in engagement reflects varying political approaches within the Western alliance,” the Kremlin spokesperson said.

    Talks with U.S. Representatives

Russia confirmed that preparations are underway to receive U.S. representatives in Moscow as part of discussions related to Ukraine. These talks are expected to include U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of President Trump.

While confirming the intent to hold discussions, Russian officials stated that no formal dates have been finalised. They emphasised that any talks would focus on exploring diplomatic solutions and reducing long-term instability in the region.

    Broader Geopolitical Implications

Analysts suggest that Russia’s comments on Greenland and Ukraine reflect broader concerns about shifting power dynamics and competing narratives in global diplomacy. Greenland’s strategic location between North America and Europe has placed it at the center of Arctic security discussions, even as local authorities continue to emphasise autonomy and peaceful development.

Observers also note that Russia’s criticism of Western “double standards” aligns with its wider messaging on international relations, particularly in contexts involving sovereignty, military alliances, and regional influence.

    Outlook Ahead

As Arctic geopolitics evolve, experts believe that dialogue among major powers will be critical to preventing escalation and ensuring stability. Greenland’s status, while legally settled, continues to feature in broader strategic conversations that extend beyond the island itself.

For now, Russia has reiterated its position clearly: Greenland is Danish territory under international law, and discussions around its security should remain grounded in cooperation rather than confrontation.
