Shashi Tharoor Likely to Skip Congress Strategy Meet on Kerala Elections After Kochi Event Discomfort

Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor is expected to remain absent from an important meeting convened by the Congress high command to review the party’s preparedness for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections. According to party sources, the decision follows unease felt by Tharoor over certain developments during a recent party programme in Kochi that was also attended by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

The meeting, considered significant in the context of Kerala’s high-stakes electoral battle, was aimed at aligning leaders and finalising the party’s approach in the state. Tharoor’s non-participation has drawn attention within political circles, as it comes at a time when the Congress is attempting to project unity and organisational clarity ahead of the polls.

    Discomfort After Kochi Programme

Sources familiar with the matter indicated that Tharoor was dissatisfied with the manner in which arrangements were handled at a Mahapanchayat-style event held in Kochi earlier this week. The programme, organised to mobilise party workers and supporters, witnessed confusion regarding seating protocols and the sequence of speakers.

Tharoor, who represents Thiruvananthapuram in the Lok Sabha and is among the party’s most recognisable faces in Kerala, was reportedly informed in advance about a specific order of addresses. However, the sequence later changed, with multiple leaders speaking after the arrival of Rahul Gandhi. This deviation from the earlier plan is said to have caused unease, particularly given Tharoor’s seniority and standing within the organisation.

Party insiders noted that such protocol-related issues, when played out at a public event, can be sensitive for senior leaders and often leave lasting impressions. In this case, the confusion is believed to have contributed to Tharoor’s decision to distance himself, at least temporarily, from internal organisational discussions.

    Lack of Acknowledgement Noted

Observers present at the Kochi event also pointed out that during his address, Rahul Gandhi did not make a direct reference to Tharoor. While political speeches often focus on broader themes and collective messaging, the absence of a specific acknowledgement was noticed by party workers and commentators alike, given Tharoor’s prominence in Kerala politics and his long association with the Congress.

Sources close to Tharoor suggested that this, combined with the organisational lapses, reinforced a perception of being overlooked. While no public statement has been made by Tharoor himself, he is understood to have conveyed his disappointment privately to associates, describing the incident as reflective of a larger issue of communication and coordination within the party.

    Impact on Internal Dynamics

Tharoor’s likely absence from the Kerala elections meeting has sparked conversations within Congress circles about internal discipline, mutual respect, and the need for clearer coordination among leaders. With assembly elections approaching, party strategists are keen to avoid any signals that could be interpreted as internal discord.

Political analysts point out that while differences and misunderstandings are not uncommon in large national parties, their timing and handling become crucial during election season. Kerala remains a politically competitive state, and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is expected to face a closely contested battle.

    No Official Statement Yet

As of now, the Congress leadership has not issued an official response regarding Tharoor’s reported discomfort or his decision to skip the meeting. Party officials have maintained silence, possibly to prevent the issue from escalating into a public debate.

Despite stepping away from the internal discussion, Tharoor is scheduled to attend the Kerala Literature Festival, highlighting his continued engagement with public and cultural platforms in the state. This indicates that while he may be distancing himself from certain party forums for the moment, he remains active in his broader public role.

    Looking Ahead

Whether this episode will have a lasting impact on Congress’s internal equations in Kerala remains to be seen. Much will depend on how the leadership addresses the concerns raised and whether efforts are made to reassure senior leaders ahead of the election campaign.

For now, Tharoor’s decision underscores the challenges faced by political parties in managing organisational sensitivities while preparing for crucial electoral contests. As Kerala moves closer to the polls, maintaining cohesion within the ranks will be a key test for the Congress leadership.
