U.S. Suspends Visa and Asylum Decisions After Shooting Near White House

    Washington | November 30, 2025 — Yugcharan News

The United States has temporarily halted all asylum decisions and stopped issuing visas to individuals travelling on Afghan passports, following a shooting near the White House that left one National Guard member dead and another critically injured.

The incident occurred during a security deployment in Washington, D.C. Investigators have identified the suspect as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who was taken into custody shortly after the attack. According to officials, he now faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder and assault with intent to kill.

Senior officials stated that the administration has ordered a comprehensive review of the immigration process. The head of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Joseph Edlow, announced that asylum rulings will remain paused until the agency can ensure enhanced screening and verification procedures. Additionally, Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the suspension of visa issuance for Afghan passport holders.

Lakanwal entered the U.S. in 2021 under a resettlement programme designed to assist Afghan partners after the withdrawal of American forces. He lived with his family in Washington State and applied for asylum during the previous administration. His claim was approved earlier this year.

Authorities continue to examine the circumstances that led to the attack, while federal agencies begin implementing the newly announced restrictions. More details are expected as the investigation progresses.
