NCDC Explores Use of Social Media Trends to Strengthen Disease Surveillance

    New Delhi | November 29, 2025 — Yugcharan News

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is considering the use of social media activity to enhance its monitoring of public health trends and detect early signs of potential outbreaks. Officials say the move aims to improve predictive accuracy and strengthen India’s disease intelligence systems.

The proposal builds on the progress made by the Centre’s AI-driven surveillance platforms, including the Media Scanning and Verification Cell. This system currently analyses millions of online reports every day across 13 Indian languages, enabling the extraction of structured data related to disease type, location and scale.

According to NCDC experts, integrating insights from social media posts could provide a real-time indication of unusual health patterns, supporting faster responses and helping prevent large-scale outbreaks.

The broader goal of the AI-assisted network is to forecast emerging health risks and guide timely intervention. Officials believe that expanding the data sources—beyond news reports and formal channels—will further improve early detection capabilities.

The project is still under evaluation, and additional details are expected as the plan develops.
