US Welcomes India’s $946 Million Deal to Support MH-60R Seahawk Helicopter Fleet

The United States has welcomed India’s decision to finalise a $946 million sustainment package for its fleet of MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, describing it as a positive step for defence cooperation and regional security.

The announcement was made by the US State Department on Wednesday, with officials noting that the agreement reinforces the growing strategic partnership between New Delhi and Washington. The package, signed by India’s Ministry of Defence, will provide long-term maintenance and support for 24 MH-60R helicopters supplied by Lockheed Martin.

India had acquired the helicopters under a Foreign Military Sales agreement in 2020, and around 15 have already been inducted into naval service.

    Strengthening Maritime Operations

The US State Department’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs said the sustainment deal will improve the Indian Navy’s operational readiness. The MH-60R is a multi-role maritime helicopter used for anti-submarine missions, surface operations, search and rescue, and surveillance.

According to the bureau, the agreement will improve India’s maritime capability, enhance cooperation with the US and regional partners, and support shared security objectives in the Indo-Pacific.

    Focus on Interoperability and Readiness

Officials noted that long-term support arrangements help ensure greater availability of the aircraft and reduce maintenance downtime—critical factors for operations in the Indian Ocean Region. The package is also expected to help India strengthen its domestic repair and maintenance infrastructure over time.

This move aligns with the broader effort by both countries to enhance interoperability between their naval forces and expand cooperation across various defence domains.

    The MH-60R Platform

The MH-60R, often referred to as the “Romeo,” is widely used by the US Navy and partner nations. It can undertake a wide range of maritime missions and is equipped with advanced sensors, radar systems, and weapons suited for both surface and underwater operations.

India began inducting the platform in 2021 and established its first squadron, INAS 334, at INS Garuda in Kochi.

The helicopters contribute to India’s ability to monitor vital sea routes, support naval task forces, and respond quickly during maritime emergencies.
