A helicopter carrying six people, including the pilot, has crashed near Chayee village in the Joshimath area of Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Friday. State authorities, disaster management teams and security personnel have been deployed to the site to carry out rescue operations following the incident.

The helicopter was operating on the route from Badrinath to Sahastradhara in Dehradun when it reportedly lost communication over the Joshimath valley. The aircraft had taken off at approximately 1:14 pm, according to a statement from the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA).

The helicopter’s tracking system also stopped providing its location, leaving authorities unable to establish its precise position immediately after contact was lost. Subsequent reports indicated that the aircraft had crashed near Chayee village, close to Joshimath.

Chief Minister Dhami said he was monitoring the situation and had directed officials to coordinate the rescue operation. He also instructed authorities to ensure that seriously injured people, if any, were airlifted to advanced medical facilities for treatment.

Helicopter Lost Contact Over Joshimath Valley

According to the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority, the helicopter belonged to Trans Bharat Aviation Pvt Ltd and was operating under the call sign VT-HCX.

In its statement, the authority said the aircraft had departed from Badrinath at approximately 13:14 hours and was scheduled to travel to Sahastradhara in Dehradun.

Communication with the helicopter was lost while it was flying over the Joshimath valley. The tracking system also stopped registering the aircraft, and officials were initially unable to determine its current location.

The loss of contact prompted authorities to begin efforts to locate the helicopter and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Reports from the area subsequently indicated that smoke had been seen rising near Chayee village. The Chamoli district administration confirmed that six people, comprising five passengers and one pilot, were on board.

The precise circumstances of the crash, including what caused the aircraft to lose communication and tracking, were not immediately established in the information available.

Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami Monitors Rescue Efforts

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed the crash in a post on social media platform X, expressing concern over the incident and outlining the response initiated by the state administration.

He said a joint rescue operation was being conducted by the district administration, the disaster management department and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

Dhami said he was continuously monitoring developments and had instructed officials to make immediate arrangements to airlift seriously injured people to higher medical centres for better treatment.

He also expressed hope for the safe return of those on board.

The state administration’s response involves coordination among several agencies responsible for emergency assistance, medical support and disaster management. State rescue teams and the Army have been deployed as part of the operation.

The immediate priorities are to reach the crash site, locate all six people who were on board and provide medical assistance wherever required.

Further details about the condition of the passengers and the pilot were not established in the initial reports.

    Six People Were on Board

According to the information provided by the authorities, the helicopter was carrying five passengers and one pilot.

The individuals were identified as Prathapa, Arun, Shankar Gowda, Sudheer K, HS Natraja and Captain Himanshu, the pilot.

Authorities were working to establish the situation at the crash site and determine the condition of everyone on board.

The district administration’s initial information indicated that the helicopter had been travelling from Badrinath towards Dehradun when the incident occurred.

The availability of accurate information about the passengers’ condition remained a key concern as rescue teams continued their efforts.

Officials had not provided a detailed account of the events immediately preceding the crash in the initial statements cited in the reports.

Army, SDRF and District Administration Join Operation

The rescue operation involves personnel from the district administration, disaster management authorities, the SDRF and the Army.

Joshimath Sub-Divisional Magistrate Chandra Shekhar Vashishth also confirmed that officials were responding to reports of a crash in the area.

Vashishth said Army personnel, SDRF teams, police and health department officials were moving towards the site. He also indicated that he was travelling to the location.

The involvement of multiple agencies is intended to support the search, rescue and emergency response in the mountainous region.

The terrain around Joshimath can make access to remote locations challenging, particularly when weather conditions are unfavourable. However, the precise operational difficulties encountered by the teams during this incident had not been detailed in the initial reports.

Authorities were expected to assess the situation on the ground before providing further information about the rescue operation and the condition of those involved.

Trans Bharat Aviation Fleet Grounded as Precaution

Following the incident, the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority said the entire fleet of Trans Bharat Aviation Pvt Ltd had been grounded as a precautionary measure.

The decision was announced while authorities responded to the crash involving the company’s helicopter.

Grounding the fleet temporarily prevents the company’s other aircraft from operating while officials assess the situation and determine what further action may be necessary.

The initial statement did not establish the cause of the crash or indicate whether a technical malfunction, adverse weather or another factor was responsible.

Any determination regarding the circumstances of the incident would require further investigation and relevant technical findings.

The grounding of the fleet is a precautionary step and does not, by itself, establish that a technical defect caused the crash.

    Snowfall Reported in the Area

The helicopter reportedly took off from Badrinath amid snowfall in the region. The adverse weather conditions were noted in reports concerning the aircraft’s disappearance.

The helicopter subsequently lost communication over the Joshimath valley, and its tracking system stopped recording its position.

However, the initial information did not establish whether snowfall or any other weather-related factor contributed to the crash.

A definitive explanation would require an examination of the aircraft, operational records, weather information and other relevant evidence.

Authorities had not released a conclusive account of the events leading to the incident at the time of the initial reports.

Uttarakhand Has Experienced Previous Helicopter Incidents

The latest crash has renewed attention on helicopter safety in Uttarakhand, where aircraft are frequently used to reach mountainous destinations and remote areas.

According to the background information cited in the report, the state has recorded at least 12 distinct helicopter incidents over the past decade. These included five major fatal crashes and seven non-fatal incidents, such as forced emergency landings, technical landings and ground-safety fatalities.

One of the major incidents occurred in June 2025, when seven people were killed after a helicopter carrying passengers from Kedarnath to Guptkashi crashed in a forested area.

That incident highlighted the risks associated with helicopter operations in mountainous terrain. However, previous accidents do not establish any connection with the circumstances of the latest crash.

Each incident requires a separate assessment based on the aircraft involved, its operating conditions, the weather and the findings of the relevant investigation.

    Investigation and Further Updates Awaited

The immediate focus remains on the rescue operation and establishing the condition of the six people who were on board the helicopter.

Authorities will also need to determine the circumstances in which the aircraft lost communication and tracking before the reported crash near Joshimath.

The Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority’s decision to ground the operator’s fleet adds a further safety measure while the incident is being addressed.

At this stage, the initial reports do not establish the cause of the crash. Details concerning the passengers’ condition, the extent of injuries, the aircraft’s final flight path and the findings of any subsequent investigation require confirmation from the authorities.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has said he is monitoring the situation and has directed officials to ensure that seriously injured people receive prompt medical attention.

Rescue teams, the Army and local administration personnel are involved in the response as authorities work to establish the full details of the incident.
