The Delhi Police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) over alleged objectionable and defamatory social media posts targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during recent NEET-related protests in the national capital. The case marks the latest development in the investigation into online content circulated during demonstrations organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar.

According to police officials, notices have been issued to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), directing the company to remove the identified content immediately while preserving digital evidence required for the ongoing investigation. Authorities have also sought subscriber details and account-related information connected to the posts under scrutiny.

FIR Registered Under Multiple Charges

Police officials said the FIR has been registered at the Special Cell's Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit. The case reportedly includes charges related to criminal intimidation, public mischief, and defamation.

Investigators stated that the alleged social media posts surfaced during the protests held at Jantar Mantar, where demonstrators gathered to demand action over the alleged NEET-UG examination paper leak.

Authorities have clarified that the investigation will examine whether the online material violated provisions of Indian law and whether coordinated activity was involved in spreading the content.

Notice Issued to X

As part of the investigation, Delhi Police has sent a formal notice to X requesting immediate action against the identified posts and accounts.

According to officials, the platform has been instructed to:

• Remove or disable access to the identified posts and videos.
• Preserve subscriber information and account records.
• Retain relevant technical logs for investigative purposes.
• Share information related to the accounts involved.

Police reportedly directed the platform to comply within three hours of receiving the notice while ensuring that digital evidence remains intact for legal proceedings.

Investigators believe preserving electronic records will help establish the origin and distribution of the disputed content.

Police Cite Concerns Over Public Order

According to police sources, the notice stated that the continued circulation of allegedly objectionable and defamatory material could negatively affect public order and contribute to unnecessary political controversy.

Officials further noted that social media platforms should prevent misuse of their services for unlawful activities, including cyber-enabled offences and the spread of defamatory material.

Authorities emphasized that cooperation from digital platforms is essential to ensure an effective investigation.

Hundreds of Accounts Under Scanner

During the course of the investigation, police identified approximately 500 social media accounts that allegedly shared deepfake or AI-generated content connected to the protests.

A senior police officer stated that recommendations have been made to the respective social media platforms for blocking these accounts pending further examination.

Investigators are also reviewing whether any coordinated campaigns were conducted to amplify misleading or manipulated content online.

The police have not disclosed whether all the identified accounts belong to individuals within India or if some are linked to overseas operations.

Background of the Protest

The social media investigation is linked to the recent nationwide demonstrations over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which had organized the protest movement, officially called off its 36-day agitation on July 25 after announcing that the government had accepted several of its demands, including the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The demonstrations attracted significant public attention and generated extensive discussion across various social media platforms.

Violence During Parliament March

On July 20, clashes occurred between student protesters and Delhi Police personnel during a march toward Parliament.

Several people, including police personnel and protesters, reportedly sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Following the violence, Delhi Police registered multiple FIRs concerning the incidents. However, authorities later decided to withdraw 15 of those cases while continuing investigations into whether a broader conspiracy may have been involved in organizing the unrest.
