A 16-year-old girl who was allegedly gang-raped and murdered in Delhi was initially mistaken by police for a man because of the severely mutilated condition of her body, before investigators identified her through a distinctive tattoo on her arm.

The teenager’s body was found dumped in a field in the Swaroop Nagar area of outer Delhi two days after the alleged crime. According to police, the body had suffered extensive damage, making it difficult to establish the victim’s identity as well as her gender during the initial investigation.

The case has since led to the arrest of a 19-year-old man, while three minors have also been apprehended. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged sexual assault and murder, including the involvement of the four suspects and their movements before and after the crime.

Body Found in Severely Mutilated Condition

According to investigators, the teenager was allegedly raped and murdered on September 11. Her body was discovered two days later, on September 13, after local residents alerted police at around 7:30am.

The body was found in an open field in Swaroop Nagar. Police said that stray animals had attacked the remains before they were discovered, further complicating the investigation.

Investigators initially struggled to determine whether the deceased was a man or a woman. The condition of the body was described as extremely severe, with skeletal parts visible and the face no longer recognisable.

An investigator cited by Hindustan Times said the right arm was missing and the skull and ribcage were visible. Because of the extent of the injuries and decomposition, officers initially believed the body could have belonged to a middle-aged man.

The victim was found wearing blue jeans, while pieces of purple fabric were also recovered. The remains were covered in mud.

Police also found multiple stab wounds on the body. During the early stages of the investigation, officers suspected that the victim’s genitals might have been mutilated. A subsequent medical examination, however, established that the victim had been sexually assaulted.

    Tattoo Became Key Breakthrough

The identification of the victim became possible after an officer noticed a tattoo on the remains.

According to the investigators, an assistant sub-inspector examining the body at the mortuary noticed three stars arranged in a row on the left arm.

The tattoo provided police with their first significant indication that the body could belong to a woman.

Investigators subsequently began looking for families of missing girls and women whose descriptions could potentially match the remains.

Police eventually reached the victim’s family in Delhi’s Tri Nagar area. A relative showed investigators photographs of the girl stored on his mobile phone.

Among the photographs was one showing the same tattoo — three stars arranged in a row.

The matching tattoo helped investigators establish the identity of the deceased and shifted the direction of the investigation.

Police believe the victim was around 16 years old. However, officials are considering an ossification test to determine her precise age because the family reportedly did not have identity documents that could conclusively establish her age.

The determination of her age could also have significance for the legal proceedings because the investigation involves allegations concerning a minor.

No Missing Persons Complaint Had Been Filed

Another difficulty faced by investigators was that no missing persons complaint had been filed for the teenager.

According to police, the girl’s family believed she had gone out with friends and would return after a few days. This meant that investigators did not initially have a missing-person report that could have helped connect the unidentified body with a particular family.

Police therefore had to rely on forensic examination, CCTV footage and other investigative leads to establish the identity of the deceased.

The investigation continued for several days before officers found footage that provided a possible link to the crime.

CCTV Footage Leads Police to Tempo

Investigators examined CCTV footage from the surrounding area for two days.

Police eventually found footage showing a vehicle arriving at the location where the body was later discovered. Investigators said the vehicle had a distinctive design on its left side, which helped them identify it as a possible tempo used in connection with the crime.

The vehicle became a crucial lead.

Police reportedly began searching for a tempo matching the description seen in the CCTV footage. At around 1:30am on September 16, investigators located a vehicle with the same design.

The discovery allowed police to narrow their search and identify individuals who may have been connected with the vehicle.

As the investigation progressed, police detained one of the suspects. During questioning, the accused allegedly provided information about other people who were involved in the crime.

Police subsequently apprehended three minors and arrested a 19-year-old man.

Police Probe Alleged Sequence of Events

According to investigators, the 19-year-old suspect was allegedly connected to the tempo and is suspected of being the main accused in the case.

Police said the suspect knew the victim and that the group allegedly forced themselves on her.

Investigators further alleged that the girl threatened to report the incident to police after the assault. According to the police account, the suspects then decided to kill her and dispose of her body.

These details are part of the police investigation and allegations against the accused. The charges will have to be established through the legal process, and the accused are entitled to due process.

The three minors involved in the case will also be dealt with under the applicable provisions governing children in conflict with law.

    Investigation Continues

The case remains under investigation as police work to establish the complete sequence of events, identify the precise role of each accused and gather forensic and other evidence.

Investigators are expected to examine CCTV footage, vehicle records, forensic evidence, medical findings and statements of the accused and witnesses as part of the probe.

The condition of the body has made the investigation particularly challenging. Police have had to reconstruct the victim’s identity and movements without the assistance of an initial missing-person complaint.

The tattoo ultimately provided the breakthrough that connected the unidentified remains to the teenager’s family.

The case has also raised concerns about the difficulties investigators can face when unidentified bodies are found in severely decomposed or mutilated conditions. Establishing identity in such circumstances often depends on a combination of forensic evidence, photographs, personal markings and information provided by relatives.

    Legal Proceedings Expected to Follow

With one adult arrested and three minors apprehended, the investigation will now move towards collecting evidence required for prosecution.

Police will have to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged sexual assault, the subsequent killing and the disposal of the body. The medical examination, forensic findings and CCTV evidence are expected to form important components of the investigation.

The age of the victim will also be formally established as part of the process. Police have indicated that an ossification examination may be conducted because documentary proof of her age was reportedly unavailable.

The case has shocked the local community because of the circumstances in which the teenager’s body was discovered and the difficulty police initially faced in identifying her.

For investigators, the tattoo proved to be a crucial clue. What initially appeared to be an unidentified male body eventually led police to the family of a teenage girl who had not been reported missing.

As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to focus on reconstructing the events of September 11, determining the individual roles of the four suspects and presenting the available evidence before the appropriate court.
