Delhi Traders Offer Rahul Gandhi 20 Minutes With 20 Market Representatives to Discuss November 1 Rally

The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), a Delhi-based traders’ association, has made a fresh proposal to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi amid growing concerns over the INDIA bloc’s planned rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1. The trade body has offered to bring together representatives of 20 major markets for a 20-minute meeting with Gandhi, asking him to explain how the proposed gathering could benefit local businesses during the crucial Diwali shopping season.

The association has also put forward a counterproposal: if the traders are able to convince Gandhi that the rally could disrupt commercial activity and cause financial losses, they want him to publicly agree to postpone the event until after Diwali.

The proposal was communicated through a letter written by CTI chairman Brijesh Goyal. The association said it was seeking dialogue rather than confrontation and wanted the concerns of traders to be heard before the political gathering takes place.

CTI Seeks 20-Minute Meeting With Rahul Gandhi

In its letter, the Chamber of Trade and Industry requested a meeting involving 20 traders representing 20 prominent markets located within a radius of approximately five kilometres from Ramlila Maidan.

The association said that if Rahul Gandhi could explain how the expected gathering of around 10 lakh people would increase customer footfall and improve business prospects, it would immediately withdraw its opposition and welcome the rally.

However, the traders also want an opportunity to present their concerns. If they can demonstrate that the event is likely to affect customer movement and commercial activity, they have asked Gandhi to defer the gathering in the public interest.

The association described its proposal as an attempt to resolve the disagreement through discussion. Its letter stated, "We want dialogue, not a fight."

The offer comes amid continuing concerns among traders about the timing of the November 1 rally, which is scheduled during the busy festive shopping period in the national capital.

Twenty Markets Identified as Potentially Affected

According to the CTI, the markets likely to experience an impact are located between one and five kilometres from the rally venue.

The association identified 20 major commercial areas, including Chandni Chowk, Bhagirath Palace, Khari Baoli, Sadar Bazar, Chawri Bazar, Kashmere Gate, Nabi Karim, Karol Bagh, Ajmeri Gate and Daryaganj.

Other markets named in the letter include Nai Sarak, Kinari Bazar, Dariba Kalan, Fatehpuri, Naya Bazar, Filmistan, Paharganj, Gaffar Market, Jama Masjid-Meena Bazar and Lajpat Rai Market.

These commercial centres deal in a wide range of goods, including spices, dry fruits, foodgrains, jewellery, electronics, garments, books, automobile parts and furniture.

The traders fear that the arrival of a large number of rally participants could affect the movement of customers, vehicles and goods in the surrounding areas. They are particularly concerned about possible disruptions during the period when markets generally experience increased shopping activity ahead of Diwali.

The association's central argument is that the rally's timing could create difficulties for businesses that depend heavily on customer movement and uninterrupted transport access.

Rahul Gandhi Had Earlier Responded to Traders' Concerns

The latest proposal follows an earlier response by Rahul Gandhi to concerns raised by Delhi's business community.

In a social media post on Monday, Gandhi said he had heard the concerns of Delhi's traders. He also referred to the opposition's demand concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Gandhi said that the protest could end in "30 seconds" if Prime Minister Narendra Modi removed Gyanesh Kumar from the post of Chief Election Commissioner.

The INDIA bloc's proposed November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan is linked to opposition parties' demand for action against the Chief Election Commissioner over allegations concerning the electoral-roll revision process.

The CTI's letter seeks to take the discussion beyond the social media exchange by proposing a direct meeting between Gandhi and representatives of the affected markets.

The traders have asked for only 20 minutes, arguing that a short discussion could help clarify whether the rally would bring economic benefits or create difficulties for businesses.

Traders Use 'Mohabbat Ki Dukaan' Slogan in Their Appeal

The CTI has also referred to Rahul Gandhi's frequently used political slogan, "Mohabbat Ki Dukaan", while making its appeal.

In its letter, the association said it respected Gandhi's message of opening a shop of love in a marketplace of hatred. However, it urged him not to allow the festive shopping season to be disrupted.

The letter stated: "Rahul ji, aap nafrat ke bazaar mein mohabbat ki dukaan kholte hain, hum aapka sammaan karte hain, par Diwali ke bazaar mein mohabbat ki dukaan band mat karwaiye."

Translated, the statement means that the traders respect Gandhi's message of opening a shop of love in a marketplace of hatred but do not want the Diwali marketplace to be forced to close.

The association further said, "Aapki mohabbat ki dukaan ka asli chehra hum vyapari hi hain", suggesting that traders themselves represent the real face of the message Gandhi promotes.

Through these remarks, the CTI has attempted to frame its appeal around the importance of protecting traders' livelihoods while maintaining respect for the Congress leader.

Diwali Shopping Season at the Centre of the Dispute

The disagreement has emerged at a particularly important time for Delhi's retail and wholesale markets. The period before Diwali generally brings increased demand for consumer goods, festive purchases and supplies across several commercial categories.

Markets such as Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Khari Baoli, Karol Bagh and the areas around Jama Masjid serve customers from Delhi as well as buyers arriving from other parts of the National Capital Region and neighbouring states.

Traders fear that a large political gathering near Ramlila Maidan could affect accessibility to these markets. They are concerned that traffic restrictions, crowd movement and possible congestion could discourage customers from visiting commercial areas.

The association has therefore argued that the rally's timing deserves reconsideration, particularly because the event is scheduled close to Diwali.

Its latest offer presents an alternative to continued public disagreement: a meeting in which both sides can put forward their arguments before the rally takes place.

A Direct Appeal for Dialogue Before November 1

The CTI's proposal places the focus on a short meeting between Rahul Gandhi and representatives of 20 markets. The association has offered to withdraw its opposition if Gandhi can establish that the rally will support business activity and attract more customers.

At the same time, it wants the Congress leader to consider postponement if traders are able to explain the possible commercial consequences of holding the gathering during the festive period.

The proposal reflects the tension between political mobilisation and the concerns of businesses operating around major public-event venues. While opposition parties are preparing to hold a rally over their demands concerning the Chief Election Commissioner, traders are seeking assurances that the event will not interfere with their livelihoods.

The CTI has not merely asked for the rally to be postponed; it has proposed a face-to-face discussion as a way to reach a decision. Its appeal is based on the argument that the concerns of small and large traders should be considered before a large gathering takes place in an area surrounded by important commercial markets.

With November 1 approaching, the proposed 20-minute meeting could provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss the potential impact of the rally and explore whether an arrangement can address the concerns of the business community without undermining the opposition's planned political programme.
