India Summons Bangladesh High Commissioner Over “Seven Sisters” Remark

India on Tuesday summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to New Delhi following remarks made by a Bangladeshi political leader referring to India’s northeastern states as the “Seven Sisters.” The Ministry of External Affairs conveyed New Delhi’s strong objections and raised concerns over recent statements and developments affecting the security of Indian diplomatic missions in Bangladesh.

According to officials, the High Commissioner was informed about India’s serious view of the prevailing security situation and activities of certain groups that have issued statements targeting India and its interests. India rejected what it described as misleading narratives linked to recent incidents in Bangladesh and stressed the importance of maintaining law and order.

India reiterated that its relationship with Bangladesh is rooted in historical ties and people-to-people cooperation and underscored the expectation that diplomatic missions and personnel must be provided full security in line with international obligations. The matter comes amid continued diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
