Lok Sabha Pays Tribute to Ajit Pawar, Khaleda Zia and Former Members

The Lok Sabha on Wednesday paid solemn tributes to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, and five former Members of Parliament who passed away recently, marking a moment of remembrance at the start of the Budget Session of Parliament.

As the House assembled following President Droupadi Murmu’s address to a joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the Secretary-General laid copies of the President’s address on the Table of the House. Soon after, Speaker Om Birla read out obituary references in memory of the departed leaders and former parliamentarians. Following the tribute, the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day as a mark of respect.

    Tribute to Ajit Pawar

Ajit Pawar, who served as Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister and was a former member of the Lok Sabha, died earlier on Wednesday in a tragic air crash near Baramati airport in Pune district. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through political circles across the country, particularly in Maharashtra, where he was regarded as one of the most influential leaders of his generation.

While reading the obituary reference, Speaker Birla recalled Pawar’s contributions to public life and his role as a parliamentarian. Members observed silence in his memory, reflecting the gravity of the loss. Pawar’s long political career spanned decades and included multiple stints in government, both at the state and national levels.

    Remembering Khaleda Zia

The House also paid tribute to Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, who was remembered for her role in shaping her country’s political landscape and for her contribution to bilateral ties with India. In his remarks, Speaker Birla noted that Zia’s efforts towards strengthening India-Bangladesh relations would be remembered with respect.

Khaleda Zia was one of the most prominent political figures in Bangladesh’s history, serving as Prime Minister on multiple occasions. Her political career, marked by both achievements and controversies, left a lasting imprint on South Asian politics.

    Former Members Honoured

In addition to Pawar and Zia, obituary references were read out for five former Members of Parliament: Shalini Patil, Bhanu Prakash Mirdha, Satyendra Nath Brohmo Chaudhury, Suresh Kalmadi, and Kabindra Purkayastha.

Shalini Patil had served as a member of the seventh Lok Sabha, while Bhanu Prakash Mirdha was part of the eleventh Lok Sabha. Satyendra Nath Brohmo Chaudhury represented his constituency in the tenth Lok Sabha.

Suresh Kalmadi, a prominent political figure from Maharashtra, had a long parliamentary career, serving in the eleventh, fourteenth, and fifteenth Lok Sabha. Kabindra Purkayastha was a member of the tenth, twelfth, and fifteenth Lok Sabha, and was remembered for his active participation in parliamentary proceedings.

Speaker Birla briefly outlined the parliamentary tenures of each of the former members, acknowledging their service to the nation and their contributions to legislative work.

House Adjourned as Mark of Respect

After the obituary references were read, members of the Lok Sabha stood in silence to honour the departed leaders. In keeping with parliamentary tradition, the House was adjourned for the rest of the day as a mark of respect.

The tributes came on a day of heightened emotion in Parliament, as news of Ajit Pawar’s death dominated political discourse across party lines. Leaders from the ruling coalition and the Opposition alike have expressed condolences, highlighting Pawar’s role in public life and his impact on Maharashtra’s politics.

    Wider Political Context

The tribute session took place on the opening day of the Budget Session, which is scheduled to run in two phases until April. While legislative business was expected to begin after the President’s address, the Lok Sabha’s adjournment underscored the significance of the losses being mourned.

Ajit Pawar’s death, in particular, is expected to have far-reaching political implications in Maharashtra, where shifting alliances and party realignments have defined recent years. His absence leaves a vacuum in state politics, even as the national leadership prepares for key legislative and policy debates in the coming weeks.

As Parliament resumes business in the days ahead, the memory of the leaders honoured on Wednesday is likely to remain present, serving as a reminder of the individuals who shaped India’s parliamentary and political journey over the decades.
