Ram Temple Donation Theft Case: CCTV Footage Allegedly Shows Staff Hiding Cash During Counting

Fresh developments have emerged in the investigation into the alleged theft of donation money at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, with investigators claiming that CCTV footage has captured several accused individuals secretly removing cash while donations were being counted.

According to officials associated with the investigation, video recordings reviewed by the police allegedly show five of the arrested suspects concealing bundles of currency notes inside their clothing and socks during the donation counting process. The footage was reportedly obtained from the temple's Pilgrim Facility Centre, where donations collected from devotees are processed.

The case came to light after the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust filed a complaint, leading to the registration of an FIR on June 25. Following the complaint, police arrested eight individuals in connection with the alleged misappropriation of temple donations.

Investigators say they have recovered nearly ₹80 lakh during searches conducted at locations linked to the accused. Officials believe the recovered money may be part of the funds allegedly taken from temple donations. Further searches are continuing as authorities attempt to determine whether any properties or other assets were purchased using the suspected stolen money.

During the investigation, police reportedly examined around 45 days of CCTV recordings available at the temple. Officials noted that the surveillance system does not retain footage beyond this period, making it difficult to establish exactly how long the alleged theft may have been taking place.

Sources involved in the probe stated that investigators are also examining documents seized from the accused to identify possible financial transactions and assets connected to the case.

The investigation has expanded beyond the arrested individuals. Authorities are reportedly looking into the overall system used for handling temple donations, including the recruitment process for personnel assigned to count cash and the security arrangements inside the counting facility.

Police officials have indicated that access control measures at the counting centre are also being reviewed. Investigators are examining whether weaknesses in monitoring, frisking procedures and staff verification may have allowed the alleged theft to continue unnoticed.

The role of the manpower agency that supplied counting staff has also come under scrutiny. The agency has claimed that it merely completed documentation and verification formalities after receiving names from the concerned bank. According to the agency, it did not independently recruit or select the personnel assigned to work at the temple.

The director of the agency stated that the company generally provides housekeeping and support staff and had followed the instructions provided by the bank while processing appointments. He also claimed that the relevant records have already been shared with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) examining the case.

Meanwhile, investigators are also reviewing the role of officials associated with the banking process to determine whether there were any procedural lapses or failures in supervision. Authorities have not announced any action against bank personnel at this stage, but officials confirmed that all aspects of the donation management process remain under examination.

The alleged theft has raised concerns about the security of donations made by devotees and the procedures followed for handling large amounts of cash at one of India's most visited religious sites. Officials say the investigation is ongoing, and additional evidence is being examined before further legal action is taken.

Police have stated that the probe will continue until the complete flow of the allegedly stolen funds is traced and all individuals found responsible are identified.
