Indian equity benchmarks closed largely flat on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, with the BSE Sensex slipping marginally after two consecutive sessions of gains, as investors booked profits in information technology and pharmaceutical stocks amid mixed global cues.

The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 42.64 points, or 0.05%, to close at 85,524.84. During the session, the index touched an intraday high of 85,704.93 and a low of 85,342.99. The NSE Nifty 50, meanwhile, ended slightly higher, gaining 4.75 points, or 0.02%, to settle at 26,177.15.

Among the Sensex constituents, shares of Infosys, Bharti Airtel, Adani Ports, Sun Pharma, Tech Mahindra, Axis Bank and Maruti Suzuki were among the major losers. On the other hand, ITC, UltraTech Cement, Tata Steel and HDFC Bank provided some support to the index.

Asian markets mostly ended in positive territory, with gains seen in South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225 and China’s Shanghai Composite, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed lower. European markets were trading mixed during Indian market hours. U.S. stock markets ended higher in the previous session on Monday.

According to exchange data, Foreign Institutional Investors sold equities worth ₹457.34 crore on Monday, while Domestic Institutional Investors remained net buyers, purchasing shares worth ₹4,058.22 crore.

In the commodities market, Brent crude oil prices edged up 0.10% to $62.13 per barrel.

Market participants continued to track global developments and expectations around U.S. Federal Reserve policy ahead of the upcoming earnings season. In the previous session on Monday, the Sensex had gained 638.12 points, or 0.75%, while the Nifty had risen 206 points, closing above the 26,000 mark.
