US Expands Travel Ban to 39 Countries, Citing Security Concerns

The United States has widened its travel restrictions, adding 20 more countries to its existing list, taking the total to 39 nations. US President Donald Trump signed a new proclamation imposing a full travel ban on seven additional countries and partial entry limits on 15 others, effective January 1.

Countries facing a complete ban include Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, Syria, Laos and Sierra Leone, along with Palestinians holding Palestinian Authority travel documents. Partial restrictions have been placed on nations such as Nigeria, Angola, Senegal, Tanzania and Zimbabwe, among others.

The White House said the decision was based on national security risks, terrorist activity, weak identity verification systems, and high visa overstay rates. Syria was specifically flagged for lacking a reliable central authority to issue official documents.

The move follows recent security incidents involving foreign nationals in the US and abroad. However, exemptions will apply to permanent residents, existing visa holders, diplomats, athletes, and individuals entering for US national interests.
