Experts Warn New VB–G RAM G Bill Could Weaken Rural Job Guarantee

Experts and labour activists have raised concerns over the proposed VB–G RAM G Bill, 2025, which seeks to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). They say the new law alters the demand-driven nature of rural employment by shifting greater control to the central government.

While the bill increases guaranteed work from 100 to 125 days, it gives the Centre authority to decide fund allocation, work locations, and approvals, reducing the role of gram panchayats. States are also expected to bear a larger share of costs, which critics say could limit employment opportunities in poorer regions.

Specialists warn that the changes may increase migration, weaken workers’ bargaining power, and reduce access to guaranteed work, particularly during agricultural seasons. The bill has sparked debate in Parliament and among policy experts over the future of rural employment support in India.
