India Braces for Prolonged Heatwave as Temperatures Near 48 Degrees Celsius

Several parts of India continue to battle an intense heatwave, with temperatures nearing 48 degrees Celsius in multiple regions and weather authorities issuing alerts across large sections of the country till May 28. Officials have warned that the combination of extreme daytime heat, rising humidity, and unusually warm nights may increase health risks and disrupt normal life in many states.

According to the India Meteorological Department, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are expected to persist across northwestern, central, eastern, and parts of peninsular India over the coming days. Authorities in several states have already issued advisories urging citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours.

Meteorologists stated that the current weather pattern is being intensified by dry winds, delayed monsoon progression in several areas, and rising nighttime temperatures that are preventing adequate cooling after sunset.

Heatwave Conditions Intensify Across Northern India

Large parts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi remained under severe heat stress conditions on Friday.

Among the hottest locations recorded in the country was Banda in Uttar Pradesh, where temperatures reportedly touched nearly 47.6 degrees Celsius. Other cities including Prayagraj and Varanasi also registered temperatures crossing 45 degrees Celsius.

Officials stated that red alerts have been issued in several districts of Uttar Pradesh due to extremely high temperatures and increased risk of heat-related illnesses. In some areas, local administrations reportedly implemented temporary measures to reduce public exposure to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours.

Weather experts warned that prolonged exposure to such conditions may result in dehydration, fatigue, dizziness, and heatstroke, particularly among elderly citizens, children, and outdoor workers.

    Delhi-NCR Faces Severe Heat Stress

The national capital region continued to witness scorching temperatures with several monitoring stations recording readings well above seasonal averages.

Officials stated that parts of New Delhi recorded temperatures above 43 degrees Celsius, while some locations on the outskirts reported even higher figures. The IMD has maintained a heatwave warning for Delhi and adjoining regions till May 28.

Experts noted that although isolated light rainfall or thunderstorms may occur in some areas, they are unlikely to provide significant relief from the prevailing heat conditions. Dry desert winds moving towards the plains are expected to keep temperatures elevated through the coming week.

The intense weather also reportedly affected power infrastructure in parts of Gurgaon after a technical fault disrupted electricity supply in several areas. Reports suggested that metro services and daily commuting were briefly impacted during the outage.

    Warm Nights Increasing Health Risks

Health specialists have expressed concern over the persistence of “warm night” conditions being observed in several states. Unlike traditional heatwaves where temperatures drop after sunset, many regions are now witnessing unusually high nighttime temperatures.

Meteorologists stated that warm nights reduce the body’s ability to recover from daytime heat exposure, increasing physical stress and the risk of heat-related medical emergencies.

Areas in Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Odisha, and Telangana are expected to continue witnessing such conditions over the next few days. Experts have advised residents to remain hydrated even during nighttime hours and ensure proper ventilation indoors.

Medical professionals further warned that people with heart disease, respiratory problems, and other pre-existing conditions may face greater vulnerability during prolonged heatwaves.

Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab Continue to Reel Under Extreme Heat

Northwestern India remained firmly under the grip of hot and dry winds sweeping through the plains of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab.

Several cities in Haryana recorded temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius, while parts of Rajasthan are expected to witness severe heatwave conditions through the end of the week. Weather officials indicated that western Rajasthan may remain among the worst-affected regions during the current heat spell.

Authorities in some districts have reportedly advised schools, labourers, and outdoor workers to take precautionary measures during afternoon hours. Emergency services and hospitals have also been instructed to remain alert for potential heatstroke cases.

Central India Witnessing Prolonged Severe Conditions

Parts of Madhya Pradesh are also experiencing prolonged periods of extreme heat. Meteorological officials stated that eastern Madhya Pradesh is likely to remain under severe heatwave conditions over the coming days.

Experts noted that the continuous rise in both daytime and nighttime temperatures is creating sustained heat stress in urban and rural areas alike. Public health officials have advised people to consume adequate fluids and avoid strenuous physical activity during the hottest parts of the day.

In addition to Madhya Pradesh, regions in Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha are also expected to remain affected by elevated temperatures.

Eastern India Faces Heat and Humidity Combination

States including Odisha, Jharkhand, and parts of West Bengal are witnessing a difficult combination of high heat and humidity.

Weather experts stated that humidity levels in eastern and coastal regions are making temperatures feel significantly more oppressive. Such conditions often increase discomfort and place additional pressure on the human body.

The IMD has warned that warm night conditions may continue in Odisha till at least May 26. Officials also cautioned that coastal and low-lying regions may experience increased heat stress because of moisture-laden winds.

    Heatwave Expands Into Southern India

The heatwave has also spread into parts of southern India, including regions of Telangana and Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Authorities stated that several cities are witnessing prolonged periods of hot weather accompanied by intense sunlight during afternoon hours.

In some urban centres, local administrations reportedly installed shade structures and temporary protective arrangements at busy traffic intersections to provide relief to commuters and traffic personnel.

Meteorologists stated that although southern states may witness isolated rainfall activity in the coming days, temperatures are expected to remain above normal in many districts.

Himalayan States Also Witness Unusual Temperature Rise

Even traditionally cooler regions in northern India have recorded unusual weather patterns this season. The IMD has forecast isolated heatwave conditions in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

Experts stated that rising temperatures in hill states are becoming increasingly common and may be linked to broader climatic shifts affecting weather systems across South Asia.

Tourist destinations in several hilly regions have also reported warmer-than-usual conditions during the current summer season.

Climate Experts Link Rising Heatwaves to Climate Change

Climate researchers and environmental experts have linked the increasing intensity and duration of heatwaves in India to broader climate change trends.

According to several studies cited by experts, the frequency and duration of heatwave events in India have steadily increased over recent decades. Scientists have particularly highlighted the rise in nighttime temperatures and humidity as factors making recent heatwaves more dangerous than earlier events.

Environmental analysts stated that urbanisation, deforestation, and changing global climate patterns may be contributing to prolonged extreme weather episodes.

Experts also warned that frequent heatwaves could impact agriculture, water availability, electricity demand, and public health infrastructure if mitigation and adaptation measures are not strengthened.

    Authorities Issue Public Safety Advisory

Officials across multiple states have urged residents to follow heat safety protocols during the ongoing weather conditions.

Authorities advised people to avoid direct sunlight between afternoon hours, drink sufficient water, wear light cotton clothing, and remain indoors whenever possible. Citizens have also been urged to immediately seek medical attention if symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, or breathing difficulties occur.

Health departments in several states are reportedly monitoring heat-related illnesses closely as temperatures continue to remain above normal across large parts of the country.

Weather officials indicated that conditions may remain severe through the coming week before any significant relief is expected in most regions.
