India continued to face the full force of the southwest monsoon on Tuesday as torrential rainfall triggered landslides, flash floods, waterlogging, transport disruptions and evacuations across several states. Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and the national capital experienced varying degrees of weather-related emergencies, prompting authorities to intensify rescue operations and issue fresh weather alerts.
Among the most serious incidents was a devastating mudslide in Kerala's Wayanad district, where at least one person lost their life, several others were injured, and multiple people were reported missing after heavy rainfall triggered a landslip near an under-construction tunnel project. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) subsequently issued a red alert for Wayanad, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and urging residents to remain vigilant.
The widespread impact of the monsoon has once again highlighted the vulnerability of several regions to extreme weather events, with disaster response teams, local administrations and emergency services working around the clock to minimise casualties and restore normalcy.
Wayanad Mudslide Triggers Massive Rescue Operation
The most alarming development emerged from Kerala's Wayanad district, where continuous heavy rainfall led to a massive mudslide near Kalladi, close to Meppadi. The landslip occurred near the entrance of the under-construction Anakkampoyil–Kalladi–Meppadi tunnel road project, an important infrastructure initiative connecting Kozhikode and Wayanad.
According to officials, the mudslide struck during the morning hours, trapping several individuals near the project site. Initial reports confirmed one fatality, while seven people were hospitalised with injuries. Authorities also stated that seven individuals remained missing, prompting an extensive search and rescue operation involving multiple agencies.
Officials clarified that no labourers were working inside the construction zone at the time of the incident. Those feared trapped are believed to include engineers, supervisors and security personnel present near the project site.
Kerala Chief Minister confirmed that senior ministers were immediately dispatched to Wayanad to monitor rescue efforts and coordinate emergency relief operations. Rescue teams, including disaster response personnel, heavy machinery operators and local authorities, continued clearing debris amid challenging weather conditions.
IMD Issues Red Alert for Wayanad
Following the landslide, the India Meteorological Department upgraded Wayanad to a Red Alert, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204 millimetres within 24 hours.
Weather officials recorded exceptionally high rainfall in several parts of the district, particularly in Mananthavady and Vythiri, where continuous rainfall significantly increased the risk of further landslides and flash floods.
The IMD also extended a Red Alert to neighbouring Kozhikode district, while Orange Alerts remained in force for Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.
Authorities urged residents living near hill slopes, rivers and vulnerable locations to move to safer places if advised by local administrations.
Maharashtra Continues to Battle Floods and Landslides
Maharashtra remained one of the worst-affected states as relentless rainfall continued to disrupt normal life across Mumbai, Palghar, Pune, Ratnagiri and Nashik.
Although Mumbai witnessed comparatively lighter rainfall on Tuesday morning after two days of intense showers, the city remained under an Orange Alert issued by the IMD, warning of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds.
As a precautionary measure, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ordered the closure of all government, private and civic-run schools and colleges across Mumbai for the day.
Officials advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert as weather conditions could deteriorate rapidly.
In Palghar district, authorities reported that at least ten people had lost their lives in rain-related incidents since the beginning of July. Thousands of residents from flood-prone villages have been shifted to relief camps as rivers continue flowing above danger levels.
Emergency shelters have been activated while rescue personnel continue monitoring vulnerable areas.
Landslides Continue in Ratnagiri and Pune
Heavy rainfall also triggered a major landslide in Ratnagiri district, burying multiple houses under debris. Rescue teams comprising National Disaster Response Force personnel, police and local authorities rushed to the affected village to search for trapped residents.
Meanwhile, Pune district witnessed overflowing rivers and rising water levels. The river flowing through Alandi crossed danger levels, forcing authorities to temporarily close all bridges connecting the town as a safety measure.
Religious authorities also appealed to thousands of Warkari devotees to postpone their journey to Alandi for the annual Palkhi procession due to flood conditions.
Officials stated that only a limited number of participants would be allowed during the ceremonial departure to ensure public safety.
Railway Services Affected by Heavy Rain
The ongoing monsoon also severely impacted transportation infrastructure.
Continuous rainfall in the Karjat-Lonavala Ghat section resulted in multiple landslides that disrupted railway operations on the busy Mumbai-Pune route.
Railway officials reported that nearly 600 millimetres of rainfall within twenty-four hours triggered landslides at several vulnerable locations, damaging tracks and delaying train services.
Engineering teams worked throughout the day to remove debris, inspect damaged sections and restore rail connectivity as quickly as possible.
Road transport across several highways also remained affected because of waterlogging, fallen trees and landslides.
Karnataka Closes Schools in Rain-Hit Areas
Neighbouring Karnataka also witnessed heavy rainfall, particularly across the Malnad region.
District administrations declared holidays for schools, colleges and anganwadi centres in several taluks of Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga districts after continuous downpours increased the risk of landslides and flooding.
Authorities also reported the successful rescue of two engineering students from Andhra Pradesh who became stranded near Mallalli Falls in Kodagu district after water levels rose suddenly.
Fire and Emergency Services personnel carried out the rescue operation and safely evacuated both students.
Meanwhile, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister stated that the government would assess rainfall deficiency and drought conditions in other parts of the state before taking any formal decision regarding drought declaration.
Delhi Receives Rain Relief
The national capital experienced rainfall on Tuesday afternoon after several days of humid weather and high temperatures.
The India Meteorological Department issued Red Alerts for parts of North Delhi and Orange Alerts across the remaining districts, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.
Officials forecast moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the day, offering temporary relief from soaring temperatures while cautioning residents about possible waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
Gujarat, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu Also Affected
Heavy rainfall also affected Gujarat, where parts of Surat city experienced severe waterlogging after persistent downpours submerged roads and low-lying areas.
In Rajasthan, weather officials forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across several southern districts. Orange Alerts remained in effect for multiple districts, while Yellow Alerts covered most remaining regions of the state.
Meanwhile, incessant overnight rainfall in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district disrupted normal life, prompting district authorities to declare a holiday for schools in selected areas. Rivers and streams remained in spate as officials closely monitored vulnerable locations.
Jammu and Kashmir Faces Flash Floods
In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in Doda district, causing damage to houses, commercial establishments and vehicles.
Authorities confirmed that although infrastructure suffered considerable damage, there were no reports of fatalities in the latest incident.
Officials continued monitoring mountainous regions as heavy rainfall persisted across several districts.
Odisha Records Casualties
Odisha also reported rain-related casualties after continuous rainfall affected several districts.
Authorities confirmed the death of a two-year-old girl following the collapse of a rain-weakened wall. Search operations also continued for a man reported missing after being swept away by strong water currents.
Flood concerns remained high as water levels continued rising in several rivers across the state.
Disaster Management Teams on High Alert
With forecasts indicating continued heavy rainfall across large parts of western, southern and northern India, state governments have intensified disaster preparedness measures.
The National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, police, fire services and district administrations remain deployed in vulnerable districts to carry out rescue operations, evacuate residents from danger zones and restore essential services.
