Thunderstorms and Rain Likely Across India This Week, Delhi Remains Under Yellow Alert

New Delhi: Several parts of India are expected to experience thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and rainfall over the coming days as weather systems continue to influence conditions across the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rain activity in northern, eastern, central and southern regions, while also warning that temperatures in northwest India could begin rising later this week.

In Delhi, where recent showers brought relief from intense heat, the weather department has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms, rain and strong winds. Cloudy skies and intermittent rainfall are expected to continue over the next few days, providing temporary respite from summer conditions.

According to the IMD, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely in several states, including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. Some areas could also experience intense weather conditions, including heavy rain and strong winds.

Heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Bihar, Odisha and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. Weather officials have also warned that wind speeds may reach 70 to 90 kilometres per hour in isolated areas of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Hailstorms are likely in some parts of central India as atmospheric instability remains high.

Southern India is expected to remain one of the most active rain zones during the week. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu and parts of Karnataka. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds are also expected in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Rainfall activity is also likely to continue across northeastern states. Heavy rain has been forecast for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim. Authorities in these regions are keeping a close watch on weather developments due to the possibility of waterlogging and localized disruptions.

While rainfall is expected to dominate weather conditions in many regions, the IMD has indicated that temperatures across northwest India will gradually rise over the course of the week. Maximum temperatures in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan could increase by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius after falling significantly due to recent thunderstorms and rain.

Central India is also expected to witness a gradual increase in daytime temperatures after a brief cooling period. Eastern India may see a slight rise in temperatures before conditions stabilize later in the week.

For Delhi-NCR, weather officials have forecast partly cloudy to generally cloudy skies with very light to light rainfall. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are expected to accompany rain activity, particularly during afternoon and evening hours.

The yellow alert issued by the IMD remains in effect, with wind speeds likely to touch 40 to 50 kilometres per hour in some areas. Residents have been advised to remain cautious while travelling and avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.

The maximum temperature in Delhi is expected to remain between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures are likely to stay between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius.

The recent spell of rain has also improved air quality across the capital. Strong winds and rainfall have helped disperse pollutants, resulting in better air quality compared to previous weeks.

Meteorologists say the current weather pattern is being influenced by a combination of factors, including a western disturbance, cyclonic circulation over parts of northwestern India and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal. These systems are creating favourable conditions for rainfall and thunderstorm activity across large parts of the country.

As weather conditions continue to fluctuate, the IMD has urged residents to stay updated through official forecasts and advisories. While the rain is providing relief from the heat, strong winds and thunderstorms could lead to temporary disruptions in transportation and daily activities.

With rainfall expected to continue in many regions and temperatures likely to rise later in the week, India is set to witness a mix of changing weather conditions as June begins.
