The second phase of polling in the West Bengal Assembly elections witnessed a significant voter turnout on Wednesday, with participation reaching approximately 78.68% by 3 p.m., according to official data released by the Election Commission of India (ECI). While the voting process remained largely orderly across most regions, isolated incidents of tension and political confrontation were reported from several constituencies.

This phase of the election is being closely monitored by political observers, as it covers a substantial portion of southern West Bengal, including key urban and semi-urban districts. The outcome is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the overall electoral landscape of the State.

    Extensive Coverage Across Key Districts

Polling in this phase is being conducted across 142 Assembly constituencies spread over seven districts—North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Howrah, Kolkata, Hooghly, and Purba Bardhaman. These regions collectively represent a politically significant segment, often regarded as a stronghold of the ruling party.

According to the ECI, district-wise turnout figures showed notable participation, with Purba Bardhaman recording the highest turnout at over 83%, followed by Hooghly and Howrah with figures exceeding 80% and 77% respectively by mid-afternoon.

With an electorate of over 3.21 crore voters and more than 1,400 candidates in the fray, the scale of the electoral exercise remains one of the largest in the country.

    High-Profile Contests Draw Attention

Among the key constituencies in this phase is Bhabanipur, which has emerged as a focal point due to the presence of prominent political figures contesting from the seat. The constituency witnessed heightened political activity throughout the day, including visits by senior leaders and increased security deployment.

Reports indicate that leaders from major political parties exchanged remarks in public spaces near polling stations, reflecting the high-stakes nature of the contest. However, no direct confrontation between the individuals was officially confirmed.

    Security Measures and Monitoring

Authorities deployed extensive security arrangements to ensure smooth conduct of polling. More than 2,000 companies of central armed police forces, along with State police personnel, were stationed across sensitive locations. Additionally, officials from various agencies were assigned to monitor compliance and maintain law and order.

Election officials stated that polling was conducted under strict surveillance, including real-time monitoring of booths and rapid response teams deployed in vulnerable areas. In certain constituencies with a history of electoral disturbances, additional personnel were stationed as a precautionary measure.

    Allegations and Counter-Allegations Surface

Despite the overall peaceful conduct reported by officials, multiple political parties raised concerns regarding alleged irregularities. Some leaders claimed issues related to electronic voting machines (EVMs), including delays and technical malfunctions. Others alleged attempts to influence voters or disrupt polling activities.

Officials, however, clarified that any such complaints would be investigated through established procedures. The Chief Electoral Officer indicated that repolling could be considered in specific booths if verified reports of tampering or procedural violations emerge.

“It is standard protocol to act upon verified inputs from election observers and district authorities. Appropriate steps, including repolling if necessary, will be taken based on findings,” an official statement noted.

    Isolated Incidents of Tension

Sporadic incidents of unrest were reported from certain areas, including parts of Nadia, South 24 Parganas, and Hooghly. These included minor clashes between party supporters and allegations of voter intimidation. In some cases, security personnel intervened to disperse crowds and restore order.

In one instance, authorities reportedly used controlled measures to manage a gathering outside a polling station following a dispute between rival groups. Officials later confirmed that the situation was brought under control and voting resumed without further disruption.

Separately, an incident involving a candidate visiting a polling booth drew attention after allegations were made regarding interference with voters. Security forces ensured safe exit and the matter has been referred for review by election authorities.

    Political Reactions and Statements

Leaders across the political spectrum urged voters to participate actively in the democratic process. Public appeals emphasized the importance of peaceful voting and high turnout.

Senior national leaders also commented on the polling process, with some praising voter enthusiasm and others expressing concerns over alleged irregularities. Statements issued during the day reflected the intensity of the electoral contest, though officials maintained that the process remained largely stable.

Certain remarks made by political representatives regarding election outcomes and governance were noted, though these were treated as part of routine campaign discourse.

    Voter Participation and Public Response

Long queues were observed at several polling stations since early morning, including a significant turnout of women and senior citizens. Election officials highlighted that special arrangements were made to assist elderly and differently-abled voters, ensuring accessibility and convenience.

In some areas, voters reported delays due to technical issues or high turnout, but most expressed satisfaction with the arrangements. First-time voters and youth participation were also visible, contributing to the overall turnout figures.

Observers noted that voter awareness campaigns and increased security presence may have contributed to higher participation levels compared to previous elections.

    Background and Electoral Significance

The second phase follows the first round of polling held earlier, which recorded a notably high turnout. Historically, the regions voting in this phase have played a crucial role in determining the final electoral outcome.

In the previous Assembly elections, the ruling party secured a majority of seats in these constituencies, while opposition parties have since intensified efforts to expand their presence in the region.

Political analysts consider this phase a critical test of electoral strength, particularly in urban and densely populated districts where voter behavior can significantly influence overall results.

    Looking Ahead

With polling scheduled to conclude later in the evening, officials are expected to release final turnout figures after data consolidation. The counting of votes is slated for early May, when the results of all phases will be declared.

Election authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring a transparent and fair process, urging stakeholders to rely on official communication and verified information.

As West Bengal progresses through its electoral cycle, the developments from this phase are likely to shape political narratives in the days leading up to the results.
