Falls to Rs 15,535 Per Gram as Domestic Rates Ease

Gold prices in India moved lower on Tuesday, September 8, with rates for 18-carat, 22-carat and 24-carat gold all recording declines compared with the previous day. According to the rates cited in the report, 24-carat gold was priced at Rs 15,535 per gram, while 22-carat gold stood at Rs 14,240 per gram. The rate for 18-carat gold was recorded at Rs 11,651 per gram.

The latest movement comes against a backdrop of changing currency conditions, expectations surrounding US monetary policy and continuing uncertainty in global markets. Gold has remained closely watched by investors because of its traditional role as a store of value during periods of economic and geopolitical instability.

24K Gold Records a Daily Decline

The price of 24-carat gold in India fell by Rs 186 per gram compared with the rate reported on September 7. The decline brought the benchmark domestic rate to Rs 15,535 per gram on September 8.

Gold of lower purities also recorded reductions. The 22-carat rate declined by Rs 110 per gram to Rs 14,240, while 18-carat gold dropped by Rs 90 to Rs 11,651 per gram.

For buyers, however, these quoted market rates should not necessarily be treated as the final amount payable at a jewellery store. Retail prices can vary depending on the jeweller, location, making charges, taxes and other applicable costs. Consumers may therefore find differences between the indicative bullion rate and the final price of jewellery.

Based on the reported rates, the indicative figures for 10 grams were listed as follows:

    • 24-carat gold: Rs 15,535 per gram
    • 22-carat gold: Rs 14,240 per gram
    • 18-carat gold: Rs 11,651 per gram

The figures indicate that gold prices remain sensitive to developments in both domestic and international financial markets.

    City-Wise Gold Rates

Gold prices were not identical across all major Indian cities. Chennai reported one of the higher quoted rates, while Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune were listed at similar levels.

According to the reported city-wise figures, the rates were:

    City 24K Gold 22K Gold 18K Gold
    Chennai Rs 15,567 Rs 14,270 Rs 12,040
    Mumbai Rs 15,535 Rs 14,240 Rs 11,651
    Delhi Rs 15,550 Rs 14,255 Rs 11,666
    Kolkata Rs 15,535 Rs 14,240 Rs 11,651
    Bengaluru Rs 15,535 Rs 14,240 Rs 11,651
    Hyderabad Rs 15,535 Rs 14,240 Rs 11,651
    Pune Rs 15,535 Rs 14,240 Rs 11,651
    Vadodara Rs 15,540 Rs 14,245 Rs 11,656
    Ahmedabad Rs 15,540 Rs 14,245 Rs 11,656

The relatively small differences between cities reflect the fact that domestic gold pricing is influenced by a common set of international and domestic factors, although local market conditions can lead to variations.

Stronger Rupee May Limit Domestic Gold Prices

The recent decline in domestic gold prices has also been linked to movements in the Indian rupee.

Rajeev Sharan, Head of Research at Brickwork Ratings, said gold could remain under pressure in the near term. According to his assessment, increased inflows into FCNR(B) deposits have supported the rupee.

A stronger domestic currency can have an important effect on imported commodities such as gold. Since international gold prices are generally quoted in US dollars, a stronger rupee can reduce the rupee cost of importing the metal when global prices remain relatively stable.

This means domestic gold prices can fall even when international bullion markets do not experience an equally significant decline.

The currency factor is particularly important for India because the country relies heavily on imports to meet domestic gold demand. Consequently, changes in the exchange rate can influence the price consumers ultimately encounter in the local market.

US Federal Reserve Decision Remains Important

Another major factor being watched by the gold market is the upcoming decision of the US Federal Reserve.

The Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its next interest-rate decision on September 16. Expectations around US monetary policy have created uncertainty among investors, with market participants assessing whether rates could change or remain at their existing level.

The report cited Sharan as saying that the market was divided over the possibility of a 25-basis-point rate increase or a decision to keep rates unchanged in the 3.50% to 3.75% range.

Interest rates are closely connected to gold demand because the precious metal does not provide regular interest income. When interest rates and bond yields rise, some investors may prefer interest-bearing assets. Conversely, expectations of lower rates can improve the appeal of gold.

For that reason, comments from Federal Reserve officials, economic data from the United States and changes in market expectations can all contribute to short-term movements in international bullion prices.

Global Uncertainty Continues to Influence Gold

Gold's price performance is also being shaped by geopolitical developments, particularly continuing tensions in West Asia.

The reported market assessment highlighted concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important maritime route through which a substantial volume of global energy supplies normally passes.

Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mohammed Al-Ansari reportedly warned about the importance of restoring normal traffic through the waterway, amid concerns that prolonged disruption could have consequences for international industry and trade.

Tracking data cited in the report indicated that the number of commodity vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz had fallen significantly over the preceding days. Lower shipping activity has added to concerns about energy supplies and international commodity markets.

Any prolonged disruption in a major global trade route can affect crude oil prices, transportation costs, inflation expectations and broader investor sentiment. Such developments can also influence precious metals as investors seek assets that are traditionally viewed as defensive during periods of uncertainty.

West Asia Crisis Keeps Safe-Haven Demand in Focus

The broader conflict involving regional powers has contributed to volatility across international financial markets. Concerns over shipping security, energy supplies and military escalation have made investors increasingly attentive to developments in the region.

Gold traditionally attracts interest during periods when investors are uncertain about economic growth, inflation, currencies or geopolitical stability. However, its performance does not move in only one direction during a crisis. Higher interest rates, currency movements and changes in bond yields can offset safe-haven demand.

The current market therefore reflects a combination of competing influences. On one side, geopolitical uncertainty can support gold demand. On the other, a stronger rupee and expectations surrounding US monetary policy can put pressure on domestic prices.

    What Gold Buyers Should Watch

For Indian consumers planning to purchase gold, daily quoted rates provide an important reference but should not be considered the complete cost of jewellery.

Buyers should compare rates offered by different jewellers and check the purity certification, making charges, applicable taxes and buyback conditions before completing a transaction. Jewellery prices can differ substantially from headline bullion rates because of these additional components.

Investors should also remember that short-term price movements can be unpredictable. A single day's decline does not necessarily indicate a longer-term trend.

For the coming days, market participants are likely to monitor the rupee-dollar exchange rate, international spot gold prices, developments in West Asia and signals from the US Federal Reserve.

    Outlook for the Coming Days

The gold market is entering a period in which several major factors could influence prices simultaneously. The Federal Reserve's upcoming policy decision is expected to remain a key focus, while currency movements and geopolitical developments could create additional volatility.

In India, the strength of the rupee could continue to influence the domestic price of imported gold. If the currency remains firm, it may provide some relief to local gold prices even if international bullion rates remain elevated.

At the same time, any fresh escalation in West Asia or renewed concerns about energy and shipping routes could strengthen safe-haven demand and provide support to gold internationally.

As of September 8, the reported domestic benchmark rates show a decline across all three major purity categories. The 24-carat rate stood at Rs 15,535 per gram, 22-carat gold at Rs 14,240 and 18-carat gold at Rs 11,651.

With global monetary policy, currency movements and geopolitical tensions all influencing the market, gold prices are likely to remain closely watched by both consumers and investors in the days ahead.
